Behind The Songs: Knights Of Cydonia

Het tweede lied waar ik jullie kennis mee wil laten maken is Knights Of Cydonia. Het is een onbekend nummer onder luisteraars van de top 40, maar onder Muse fans en liefhebbers van Rock is het wel bekend. Dit is een van mijn lievelingsliedjes van Muse en ik vind het een van hun beste liedjes ooit, en alhoewel ik weet dat driekwart van de lezers van deze post het afgrijselijk gaan vinden en de rest 'wel oke', hoop ik dat jullie het met mij eens zijn.

Over 'Knights Of Cydonia'

Als een soort mix van Mariachi-bands en het themalied van Doctor Who, klinkt het lied als een soundtrack van een spaghetti-western-film die zich afspeelt in de verre uithoeken van het universum, en bevat het een kettingrokende trompetspeler genaamd Franco. De intro bevat naast geluiden van briezende en galopperende paarden, ook geluiden van schietende laserpistolen. Was de standaard set opener en closer tijdens de Black Holes And Revelations tour en is nu ook set closer tijdens de The Resistance tour.

Dominic Howard:  Matt was at the back of the bus in Arizona, repeating the jerky riff to death, outside we could see the desert rolling...all that went very well together. Galloping horses, Texas, trumpets etc. We wanted to depict a journey, to make it sound like Joe Meek.

The intro of the song, especially Bellamy's guitar, is significantly influenced by the sound of The Tornados' hit single, Telstar, of which Bellamy's father, George Bellamy, was the rhythm guitarist. Bellamy has even stated, regarding the similarities, when asked about them: "Absolutely... in the guitar sound. We were aware of that when we were making the album. My dad's band mainly played instrumental music, and I always wanted to bring some more instrumental elements into our albums, to have more abstract moments. On the opening part of that song, we made a conscious effort to make the guitar sound like a 1950s synth, one of the first synthesizers around, that they'd used for the sound of the 'Telstar' bit. That was deliberate."

Chris Woltenhome heeft het lied omschreven als '40 jaar rock in zes minuten' 

Voor het eerst gedraaid op KROQ radio op 7 juni 2006.

Het lied zit in het spel Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock voor de Playstation 2 en 3, Xbox 360 en de Wii. Dat spel kwam uit in de herfst van 2007. 

Knights Of Cydonia werd nummer 1, met slechts 13 stemmen verschil op de Australia's Triple J hottest 100 van 2007.

Bijnaam van Knights Of Cydoina is 'Fancy Kid Shooting' 

Cydonia is een gebied op Mars, waar je de steenformatie in de vorm van een mensenhoofd kunt zien. Na verder zoeken, blijkt dat er complottheorieën zijn dat Cydonia eigenlijk een verborgen plek is van de NASA, omdat er meer dan één mensenhoofd is, en bewijs van piramides en een stad. Er zouden Marsmannetjes gewoond kunnen hebben. Zeker iets waar Matt geïnteresseerd in zou zijn. En nu we het er toch over hebben - er zijn mensen die geloven in een grote oorlog die Mars vernietigd heeft, waardoor de Marsmannetjes ergens anders moesten gaan wonen.... op Aarde.  

Maar, meer recente foto's van Cydonia onthullen dat de zogenoemde 'gezichten' helemaal niet op gezichten lijken, en dat de oudere foto's een resultaat waren van schaduwen op de heuvel. 

Mijn Mening:

Zoals ik al zei: Ik vind dit een van de beste liedjes die Muse ooit gemaakt heeft. Het lied is zó geniaal geschreven, de muziek is zo mooi en de tekst sluit er zo perfect op aan: het is echt geweldig. Ook is de videoclip supercool, ook al laat de kwaliteit te wensen over. Dit is het soort lied dat me gelijk weer opvrolijkt als ik af en toe chagrijnig of zo ben. Ik kan het ook bijna helemaal op de gitaar ;)
