Behind The Songs: Cave

Hello everyone!

This time, the new Behind The Songs post is about Cave, another one of my personal favourites.

About Cave:

One of the first songs Muse ever recorded, first appearing on the Muse EP. It was subsequently re-recorded and released as a single before featuring on Showbiz. The versions on the Muse EP and Showbiz differ.

"Cave" was known as Nova Scotia before the release of the Muse EP.

Matthew Bellamy: 

"The idea for Cave came from that rubbish American book, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus. There's this bit about how men go into a cave when they get stressed and I think that's probably true, although, personally, I tend to let it out. I did have a bit of a tantrum in my hotel bathroom last night - but I managed to repair the toilet, so that's OK."

On a performance of the song at Melbourne ABC Studios in 2000, Matt says at the beginning of the performance that the song is "About an old friend of mine...he's not a friend anymore".

"Cave" is featured in the soundtrack for the movie Little Nicky.

A live favourite on the tours between 1999-2001. Bellamy disliked playing the song live due, firstly, to it being an old song and, secondly, to the sustained vocal note during the "cave" in "so come in my cave". Despite this, it was played for the first time in 8 years at Teignmouth on piano instead of guitar and half a step down, and is still continued to be played live.

My Opinion

This song is so cool. From the beginning to the end. The song starts with some alien-like bleeping sound or something, and then comes the awesome guitar riff, then the drums, and then Matt starts singing. Just awesome. And it's a great song to listen if you're angry or something. And about singing along: It's definitely harder to sing than you might think, particularly the chorus. So, yeah, you might want to get some singing lessons before trying.

Over 4000 pageviews!

Hey everyone,

I just noticed my blog has had over 4000 pageviews, 4361 to be exactly. So, I wanted to say THANK YOU to all my followers, readers, likers, fans, and passers-by who read and, hopefully, like my blog, and learn something while reading, I mean, that's important too. I want to thank you guys for your time to read my posts. To just hang around on my blog, or to listen to the playlist. I never, ever thought this blog would even get a 1000 pageviews, let go 4000! But, apparently, I'm doing something right.
I also think the decision to change the language of my posts from Dutch to English was a wise decision. I'm pretty sure some people out there hate me because of my mistakes in grammar and the many spelling-mistakes I made (and will make) but I'm also sure someone out there sees that I'm trying to make my English better and better, and, honestly, I almost never need a translation site or a wordbook, and I'm proud of that.

So, that was my speech, and now the interesting part: a new playlist! As usual, it's on shuffle, so you won't hear the same song everytime you go to a new page.

Cutest Green Day Cover Band Ever!

I check out the official Green Day site every now and then, and today I read this article about three 10 and 11 year old kids that play Green Day music on the streets to make some extra money.

Pint-sized buskers hit the streets with Green Day cover band

The music of rock band Green Day burst through the Sunday afternoon quiet on Queen St. W.

Strollers stopped, listened and then threw cash into the open guitar case on the sidewalk in front of 10-singer Finn Shimizu, 10, and guitarist Eric Placenis, 11.

Finn, Eric and drummer Jonny Alikakos, 10 (who was elsewhere that day), comprise Warning, a Green Day cover band. It was Mother’s Day and the boys brought in $200 — and a talent agent gave her card to one of the boys’arents.

These boys, who live in the High Park area, may be the youngest buskers in Toronto. They are part of a wave of kids using social media and personal appearances to get their music out there. After all, it worked for Justin Bieber, who busked the streets of Stratford before he was discovered on YouTube.

Finn’s father, Doug Shimizu, a photographer and Elvis impersonator, says he was 16 before he got a basement band together. He says his son’s skills far surpass what he could do when he was much older.

For a Grade 4 student, the boy has a confidence at the microphone that is amazing, says his father. “Things are freer now and they’re not afraid of adults.”

The group has several videos on Youtube and you can follow their adventures by following “guitarboys47” on Eric’s Twitter feed.

The band has a repertoire of 20 songs and has had four paying gigs at bars and restaurants — engagements they got while busking. The most they’ve ever made in one day is $300. But there are also the lean times on dead streets when they pack it in after making only $7.

Jonny, who joined the group last September and cites Rush’s Neil Peart and Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham as his drumming idols, got his drum set for Christmas, 2009. He had lost interest in both the piano and guitar, and his parents insisted he take lessons and show a commitment to drumming before he got his own set. Initially self-taught, all of the boys now take lessons.

That same Christmas, Eric got his first guitar and his dad taught him to play Stairway to Heaven. His dad learned it from YouTube and taught it to Eric.

Warning is currently focusing on perfecting the songs of Finn’s favourite band. The only heated discussion among the group has been picking the name, Warning. Many Green Day song titles were considered too risqué for kids of their age and the lyrics have all been modified, said Jonny’s mother Heather Alikakos.

The parents are totally onside.

“It’s an outlet for Jonny. It’s to be fun and it would be a bonus for him to continue in music and flourish,” says Heather Alikakos, a homemaker. “When they busk, the parents are always there.”

When they play in a bar — such as the Black Swan on Danforth Ave. — they are the opening act and go home at 9 p.m., she says.

Busking last year enabled Eric to contribute $900 toward his new $2,000 Gibson Les Paul guitar, his pride and joy.

It was Eric’s mother, lawyer Laura Craig, who came up with the idea of the boys showing off their talents on the street. She thought performing would give them confidence.

“People honk their horns, give them the thumbs up and tell them that they rock. They always get lots of smiles and people pause to listen,” says Craig.

“Once a person jumped off and back onto a streetcar to give them coins. On more than one occasion, people stopped at a red light have gotten out of their cars to give them tips.”

For the members of Warning, busking is a great experience.

“In the beginning, I didn’t want people to see me but after about three times, I didn’t mind. I feel good now,” says Finn. “It makes people happy and I make a bit of money.”

“I want to be a professional drummer,” says Jonny.

“I just like playing guitar,” says Eric.

Isn't this the cutest thing ever? I'm totally going to check those kids out on YouTube. They're not that much younger that me - I'm almost 14 - but they are so cool! And 'Warning' is one of my favourite Green Day songs. Anyways, I'm going to check them out, and, well, see you next time, I hope ;)

Behind The Songs: Micro Cuts

It's time for a new Behind The Songs post, and this time it's about Micro Cuts. Enjoy!

About Micro Cuts

Micro Cuts is a blend of baroque melody, high pitched vocals and metal. Matthew Bellamy uses falsetto and whistle register vocals peaking at G5 during the chorus and Ab5 in descending vocals towards the end. Matt has said the song was inspired by a dream he had in which he was in desert and there were giant blades swinging from the sky.

"Micro Cuts" has been speculated to have been inspired by Prelude N°3 in D minor (BWV999) by Johann-Sebastian Bach.

"This stems from hallucinations I had of triangular blades cutting into the back of my head. It's a feeling that information is being infiltrated into your brain. I'd seen a TV programme about psychological warfare and how the government could be controlling us using a type of radiation, sending pulses to our brains. So micro cuts are cuts into your being that you can't see or avoid" - Matthew Bellamy

Micro Cuts is a metal song, with elements of baroque music. It's written in D minor, and moves at a very fast tempo of 160 bpm. The time signature frequently shifts between 4/4 and 6/4.

Bellamy's vocal range spans from D4 to A♭5, and shares his highest recorded note with Showbiz. Similar to Supermassive Black Hole, Bellamy never uses the modal register, even on lower notes where falsetto is difficult to maintain. His tone is very different in both songs, defying the common belief that the falsetto register is limited in tonal variation.

Live favourite on the 2001 and 2002 tours. The first time Micro Cuts was played live, it featured different lyrics in place of "Micro waves me insane, A blade cuts in your brain" and the chorus. Early live versions featured an extended outro that featured parts of the song "Execution Commentary", as well as extra lyrics.

The descending vocals towards the end of the song have been played intermittently through time. During early 2001 it wasn't sung at all, and post 2002 it wasn't usually sung, although one example of the descending vocals post-2002 was at The Mercy Lounge in 2004. In the latter half of the 2005 tour, the post-final-chorus section was used as an outro to "Stockholm Syndrome" on at least two occasions.

"Micro Cuts" made a return to set lists during the 2007 European tour. The first performance of 2007 featured a largely clean guitar (without effects), while further performances feature a "new effect", which mimics the layering on the album recording. The descending vocals have not returned, while vocals have been clean so far. After the final chorus and before the final decent, Bellamy has used the Kaoss pad to create a sound similar to the Kaoss pad solo and outro used with live "Supermassive Black Hole" performances.

Played occasionally during the Absolution and the Black Holes and Revelations tours. A live version of "Micro Cuts" appears on the live albums Hullabaloo Soundtrack and H.A.A.R.P..

During The Resistance tour, the outro is played in place of the outro to "Dead Star".

My Opinion

Micro Cuts isn't one of my favourite Muse songs, but I so like it a lot. It's just, once I had a headache and I was listening to my iPod, ans suddenly it went on shuffle and Micro Cuts started playing. My. Head. Hurt. A. Lot. But it is a cool song. I mean, when we play Origin Of Symmetry in the car and Micro Cuts is on, I always have this 'Matt how can you sing this high'-feeling. I can sing pretty high, but when I sing this it's just screaming. I stopped trying.

Muse win an Ivor Novello Award plus some news about their new album

Muse have won an Ivor Novello Award! The band were presented with the award for International Achievement at the ceremony in London on Thursday 19 May. The Ivors are a celebration and recognition of British music writing talent.

Other winners included Villagers, Plan B, Dizzee Rascal, Steve Winwood, Free founder Paul Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim. These covetable awards are judged by the song writing community.

Dude, Muse is winning lots of awards lately. Maybe they should do an European tour too. And visit the Netherlands, of course. I still have pictures hanging in my room from their last concert here, in the
Goffertpark, in June last year. Anyways, I wanted to share this with you.

Muse will return with a potentially "softer" album next year, the band have revealed.

Drummer Dominic Howard and bassist Chris Wolstenholme spoke about the plan to NME at this afternoon's (May 19) Ivor Novello Awards ceremony in London, where they won the International Achievement award.

After revealing that they were planning to put out the follow-up to 2009’s 'The Resistance' in 2012 Howard said that the album could mark a shift in style for the band. "Matt [Bellamy, frontman] showed me a few chords recently," he said. "Who knows, it might be softer rock, but then it's up to me and Chris to make it heavy again. A heavy rock lullaby! But I'm sure it will move forward in some way."

Wolstenholme explained that the band had been jamming on the road ahead of sessions later this year. He added: "We've got Reading Festival [plus the Leeds Festival, with them set to headline both] in August and maybe a few weeks off after that. So September, October time we’ll get into the studio and start writing and working on the songs."

Howard concluded: "It takes as long as it takes really, because you have to love it before you can just chuck it out there and into the real world. But definitely next year."

Muse have suggested that they will play their 2001 album 'Origin Of Symmetry' in full at the Reading And Leeds Festivals.

Holy Crap This Is Awesome

I just discovered something awesome. Well, my little sister did and she came running into my room, screaming 'MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE HAS COVERED SONG 2!!!' and I was like 'AAAAAAAAAAAH!' and she was like 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!' and then I told her to go away and looked for the song on YouTube. And it's freaking awesome.

Okay. I get it if you go like 'wtf' now. Let me explain the situation to you. Since we have Guitar Hero 5 for the Wii, I've loved the song 'Song 2' from Blur. I just do. And so, apparently, My Chemical Romance has covered it. And their version is even more lovable. So yeah, why not share it wih my lovely readers -and people who just were like 'omg like the name of ur blog lets check it out', yes, I know you are reading this and are going like 'omg she's talking 'bout me' Yes I am and I am hyper so I hope you don't mind. All my other posts are serious. Sorry dude.
