Shop Till You Drop in Breda (The Netherlands)

Sup Guise!

At first, my apologies for not posting anything for a week now, I just wanted to enjoy my last week of holiday. School starts tomorrow (I don't want to think about it; I just don't want to go to school again :')
Anyways, in this post I am going to tell (and show!) you my favourite shops in Breda.
Breda is a city in the south of the Netherlands. I've lived there for almost 13 years so I know where the nice shops are, haha. It's here where I first walked into an alt shop.

Breda has a really cute city centre. It's not really big  (if you live in New York, Paris, Londen or some other big city you'll probably laugh yourself to death because it's so small) but for Dutch standards, it's okay.

Grote Kerk
Source: Google
In the centre of the Grote Markt (which in English would be 'Big Market', literally translated) there's the biggest church in the city. I think it's the coolest one ever. It's called Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, but the people in Breda call it Grote Kerk ('Big Church') It has been build in the 15th century. It burned down a few times, and the construction process took over 100 years. The church is pretty much the central building in the city. You can see the big tower (I believe it's 98 metres high) from nearly everywhere in the city. Let's begin our shopping route here.

Source: www.dedansendejak.nl
De Dansende Jak
The first shop I want to tell you about is De Dansende Jak. It's an alt shop, and it's located next to the church, in the Torenstraat (the full adress is Torenstraat 16, 4811 XX Breda).
It looks awesome, right? They used to sell loads of nice Gothic clothes, but over the years it became more and more an skater/emo shop. Goths can still find some nice stuff there, you just have to look very good. Some things they sell are Emily The Strange clothing, studded and spiked wristbands, belts, and apart from the usual brands like Hell Bunny and Living Dead Souls, they also sell their own brand called De Dansende Jak, and Skullcandy headphones, Dr. Martens, T.U.K. and Etnies shoes.
Note: De Dansende Jak is leaving (sadly) at August 27, 2011. So if you want to go there, be very quick! They do have a massive sale going on, so you can find nice clothes for a ridicilously low price.

Cupido Fashion
Source: Google
Too bad the white tigers aren't visible in the photo
Yes, that's right, Breda has 2 alt shops! The other one is Cupido Fashion. It's located in Lange Brugstraat (Lange Brugstraat 30, 4811 WS Breda) a street next to the shopping mall 'De Barones'.
I knew this shop existed for as long as I can remember, but I had never been in there until I was 11 or 12 years old. The kids in my school (and I guess in the whole city) used to be really scared by the white tigers and dolls with dreadlock wigs in the shop window. I always thought it looked cool.
Cupido Fashion sells loaaaaaads of bandshirts (in fact, the entire first floor is just bandshirts, bandshirts, bandshirts and just a few hoodies, slogan shirts, bondage pants and jewelry AND MASKS. They sell MASKS! How cool is that) My sister brought a Nirvana bandshirt there only a few days ago. On the second floor are also shirts, but other clothes too. The dressing rooms are there too.
The woman who runs the shop is the nicest woman ever. My sister and I have a chat with here everytime we are there.
The shop is very narrow, so it's a bit small, but the way it's decorated is just fabulous. There's a huge King Kong statue in the middle of the shop, and there are Chuckie dolls everywhere.
This is my favourite shop.

Toetie Froetie
Okay. Toetie Froetie has. The. Best. Ice. Cream. In. The Whole. Friggin. Universe. Period.
Adress: Grote Markt, at the very end there's an Irish Pub, then Toetie Froetie is at the right corner.
Source: Google
Yes, Breda can be very busy in the summer

Other Shops
Breda has countless other shops. Stores you'll find everywhere (H&M, Zara, Vero Moda, Pimkie, Cool Cat, Miss Etam, Promiss, Bart Smit, Intertoys, Selexyz, and so on) and loads of coffee shops (hehehe xD). It's easy to get in the city centre, you can go by bus, bicycle, or with the train or car if you live elsewhere in the country or world.

Hope this was interesting,

Fashion From My Perspective: The Traditional Goth

Hey everyone,

As you've probably noticed, I've had a poll going on about what my next Fashion From My Perspective post should be about. Most people voted for Traditional Goth, so here's my new post!

The Traditional Goth. Whether they were actually around in the 80s or not, the Traditonal Goth most values the traditional scene from its earliest days, when it began to evolve from Punk.

Trad Goths venerate those original Goth bands - Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Party, The Sisters of Mercy and anything played in the infamous Batcave club. Other influential bands (e.g. The Velvet Underground) may also be revered as minor deities.

Fashion is, naturally, based on the look from the period, which itself was heavily influenced by Punk - fishnets, leather jackets, piercings - in addition to heavy make-up, HUGE hair and the occassional bit of bondage gear. And, of course, lots of black. When not listening to their extensive record collection, TradGoths may be found enjoying a snakebite & black and a clove cigarette at the local “goth” pub or club.

Sadly, Trad Goths often believe that Goth is, appropriately, dead, and the modern scene offers little consolation. New “goth” music genres such as EBM are perhaps their biggest pet peeve.

Personally, I really like the Traditional Goths. I mean, they're the ones that started the whole subculture, and they did a pretty good job. I also really like the music: Bauhaus, Siouxie And The Banshees, The Cure, Velvet Underground, The Clash... I like them.

If you want to look like a Trad Goth, you need to look for clothes from the 80's in second hand or charity shops. Of course Trad Goths wore lots of black, but I've also seen pictures of Trad Goths wearing red, blue, green, pink, yellow or any other colour, and rocking it. Whatever colour you choose, add some accessories like fishnets, spiked wristbands, necklages with bats, ankhs or a Pentagram, belts, gloves and so on.

Something else is the big hair. I'm pretty sure everyone has teased their hair once, but doing it like the Trad Goths takes lots of effort, and lots of hairspray. And it's not very healthy for your hair, too. If you want to try it anyway, I've found an article on www.hairboutique.com about 'Backombed Hairstyling Tips', with teasing (backombing) instructions:

1.   Begin by making sure that super curly or wavy tresses are flat ironed or blow dried straight.  Although curls and waves will create major height and volume, they will also have a tendency to be more easily damaged.  Avoid backcombing hair that has any natural texture to prevent excessive tangling.
2.   If hair is flat ironed before it is backcombed, be sure that the strands are 100% cool before teasing.  Strands that are still warm or hot will break or rip  easier.
3.   Begin by using a soft boar’s head brush or similar natural bristle brush to make sure that all knots and tangles are completely removed from all strands before backcombing.  Never backcomb strands that are not first detangled completely.
4.   Using a rattail or metal comb or teasing brush, part off a section of hair from the rest of the strands. Clip the remaining hair out of the way.
5.   Using your hands in conjunction with a comb or brush, gather a small section of hair approximately 1-2 inches in thickness.

Note: Use smaller strands for tighter results or larger strands for looser results.

6.   Hold the ends of the new section straight up and out from the scalp with one hand.  In essence you will be backcombing your strands in the opposite direction from its natural growth pattern.
7.   With the other hand, run the comb down the length of the hair from the end towards the base of the scalp in short, sharp and uniform strokes.
8.  If you don't achieve enough teased hair or height in the first pass, repeat the process until the hair has the right fullness, height and texture.
9.   Spray newly teased sections with a firm hold hairspray.
10. Once the first section is completely teased, pick up the next section of hair and repeat the process until all of the desired sections of hair have been completely backcombed.
11.   Use a firm hairspray to completely spray all of the teased hair when the backcombing is complete.
12.   Using both hands carefully smooth the teased hair back in the opposite direction making sure there is a lot of height in the desired area of the hair.

Lots of Trad Goths also used loads of make-up, like black lipstick and heavy eyeliner, but that's not something necessary. Something that was populair amongst the scene was to look pale. And even now most Goths like to. This isn't very hard, I mean, Manic Panic (you probably know the brand because of it's hairdye) has a range of make-up products which also includes pressed powder in very light shades, ranging from pale flesh to white. You can buy this powder in some alt shops, or on the internet.

So, I think I've now told you everything I know about the Traditional Goth. I hope this was interesting, and I wish all of you good luck with making your own Trad Goth outfit :)
See you next time!

Fashion From My Perspective: The Negative Goth

Hello everyone,

As I promised, this Fashion From My Perspevtive post is about the Negative Goth.

The Negative Goth (or Ice Goth) is a pretty unknown but very cool goth style. Obivously, black is a colour often seen in the Goth scene. But the Negative Goth is the complete opposite: They wear all white.

The style probably origined back in the 80's, when some Goths would buy second-hand wedding dresses (or the dresses from their mothers) and wore them with their heavy boots, spikes and leather jackets. From that point on, white has also became a populair colour in the Lolita style as well. It creates an innocent -sometimes also creepy- effect.

The clothes are -obivously- mostly white, but can also be seen combined with black, or any other colour, really. It doesn't really matter what kind of white clothing it is, it can be a beatiful white dress with a corset, a parasol and cute boots for a white version of the Cemetary Goth -which I guess is a starnge comparison, but, anyway- or you can go crazy with torn white fishnets for a Deathrock look.

The make-up is often a pale skin with heavy black eye make-up. The lips can be any colour, or white. You can also use white eye make-up instead of black, but this can turn out pretty weird, since white make-up on a pale skin is pretty useless. If you have a dark skin colour however, white make-up is very cool.

The downside of white clothes is that they get dirty easily. So Negative Goth is something that you might want to limit to one outfit, and wear that outfit on days without rain, strong winds, storms, snow or anything like that, and also make sure you don't trip over your white dress please. Imagine what would happen if you fell into wet sand...

I'm not a huge fan of white myself. I think it makes me look even more fat than I already am, so I avoid white clothes as much as I can. But after getting to know the Negative Goth style, I think I should really buy some white clothes for the summer... Yeah, I should. But, enough about me. I hope I've learned you something new with this post, and, well, see you next time!

Fashion From My Perspective: The Victorian Goth

Yes everyone, this time I'll explain everything about the beautiful Victorian Goth style. With special thanks to Lola ;)

One of the biggest influences on Gothic fashion has been the imagery in Gothic literature and their movie counterparts, particular that of Victorian writers such as Edgar Allen Poe and Bram Stoker. Victorian fashions like corsets, lace, frock coats and pale skin are popular throughout the scene, but maybe none wear them with as much style as the Victorian Goth.

Like their Victorian role models, the Victorian Goths wish to convey an image of decorum and dignity. Clothes must be smart and, for many, historically accurate (corsets are to be worn beneath one’s garments, of course). Ball dress and mourning garb are particularly prominent in the scene.

Victorian Goths may also indulge in activities that were popular in Victorian high society, including theatre, masquerades, tea parties and poetry. And, naturally, any kind of Dickensian or other Victorian festival that gives them an excuse to parade around in costume (not that they need an excuse).

As for music, opera and classical are the true Victorian Gothic genres, but Victorian-inspired bands such as Rasputina are also acceptable.

Personally, I love Victorian Goths. It'd be cool to be one, but I suppose I'll have to get a bit older first -Victorian Goths always seem to be in their late 20's or early 30's- and I probably need a job that starts around 1 'o clock P.M. so I have enough time to dress up. I guess the time it takes to look like a proper Victorian Goth is also the reason you probably won't ever see one out on the streets, but you do see them a lot on festivals like WGT. The look is just not very suitable for everyday wear.

If you want to dress like a Victorian Goth, you will have to win the lottery first, and then invest in a corset, a parasol, a beautiful long dress, a wig and loads of make-up, all from a very good quality of course. If you then have any money left, you can also buy a cool castle with lovely Victorian features.

I guess the thing left to do for me is to show you guys some pictures of this lovely style:

Tadaaaah. Cool, right?

Now, I'm not really an expert in things related to fashion, but I think Alexander McQueen also has some great Victorian-inspired pieces in his collections.

Is it just me or can this be labelled 'Victorian'?

That was it for now. Thanks for reading, and see you next time!

On The Web IIII

Vrouwelijke Victorian Goth ->

On The Web II

Tweede post van On The Web gaat over de meest inspirerende Tumblr die ik tot nu toe heb gevonden:
http://nowthisisgothic.tumblr.com/

Ik vind dit zo'n geweldige Tumblr. Dit is de beschrijving:
"This blog is about some looks and sounds found in the goth scenes from all over the world during the '80s. (Depending on the mood, it may also suddenly feature some of its punk roots) All photos are sorted out by a postpunk lover. A mixed collection of clubshots, big hair, creative outfits, happy people, priceless moments, bright colours or just everything in black."
