Song Of The Week: Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas

Hello everyone,

This week's song of the week is Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. The past month, I've been watching Supernatural almost non-stop (I'm currently halfway season 7) and this song is frequently used as a soundtrack. It might not be everyone's taste - my younger sister hates it - but I think the song, and especially the guitar parts, are awesome.
I found a non-official song meaning on Yahoo Answers, which is the most fucked-up site I've ever seen with really scary questions and even scarier answers ('I think my friend has caught the emo. Is there a cure and is it expensive?') but the answer to the question behind the meaning of Carry On Wayward Son sounds pretty good.

"[Carry On Wayward Son]'s a general spiritual song about life. Throughout the song, the singer hears (what I presume to be) the voice of God telling him to carry on through hardship and high points. "I was soaring ever higher" perhaps signifies the high points in the singer's life and the following "but I flew too high" may suggest a fall from grace. "Tossed about like a ship on the ocean" suggests being out of control and at the mercy of life's hardships and "I set a course for winds of fortune" could mean the singer's picking himself up out of a down period and moving on to a brighter future. The bridge (and the ending) "Carry on, you will always remember. Carry on, nothing equals the splendor. Now your life's no longer empty. Surely heaven waits for you." suggests that life was worth living through all of the experiences since, if the singer had not 'carried on' then life would have been meaningless."

You can find the lyrics to Carry On Wayward Son by clicking here. I also highly recommend watching Supernatural because the show is fantastic. Season one and two are, on a scale from one to ten, a five, but everything from season three to seven is at least worth an eight. Season eight is coming up soon, but I haven't found dates for the season premiere outside the US yet.

Sorry for my lack of posting lately. I'm on a holiday for three weeks this Sunday, but when I'm back I'll try to  post more regularly again. Thanks for reading and cheers!

xoxo

Song Of The Week: I Miss You by Blink-182

Hello everyone!

The Greatest Hits album cover
Source: Google Images
This week's song of the week is from Blink-182, a song I only discovered weeks ago. My younger sister brought their Greatest Hits CD and I Miss You, together with Feeling This, The Rock Show and All The Small Things, are my personal favourites.

I found an - in my opinion - very good analysis on the song here but it's quite long.
On lyricinterpetations.com, I found a shorter meaning:

"To me it sounds like the chorus of this song indicates mixed emotions towards someone. When delong sings "don't waste your time on me, you're already a voice inside my head" it's as if he's telling someone that it's too late, they're nothing more to him than a memory. Then hoppus follows with "I miss you...", as if contradicting the previous statement. It's like this person has been hurt badly by the one he loves, and wants to them to leave, but all that he can think about is how much he loves them. Other phrases in the song seem to indicate this as well: "the angel from my nightmare" (unless you interpret this as a direct reference to the nightmare before christmas). The "nightmare" mentioned is a pre-conceived situation this person has been fearing (ie: his loved one cheating on him, or maybe breaking up with him). And the "angel" obviously, is his loved one. The verses of the song sound mostly like symbolic reminiscings of an unrequitted lover. In anycase, that's just how I interpret the song."

This is the official music video for I Miss You. If you're interested, you can find the lyrics here

I hope you like the song as much as I do. Have fun listening and see you next time!

Song of the Week: It's Complicated by A Day To Remember

Hello everyone,

This week's song of the week is It's Complicated by A Day To Remember. I've known A Day To Remember for about half a year now, I discovered them through YouTube as a recommendation for an other video. I then brought their album What Seperates Me From You on iTunes and fell in love. It's the only ADTR album I know but it's good. Apart from It's Complicated, All I Want and All Signs Point To Lauderdale from the same album are on my list of favourite songs ever.

I haven't been able to find an official meaning of the song, but on lyricinterpetations.com I did find this interpetation:

The What Seperates Me From You album cover
Source: Google
"I think the song is talking about how the same thing keeps happening again. "Here we go again" I think its about the person he loves whether it's a relationship or a friendship the person has changed. He's talking about how much it hurts for people you love to change. "You're not the person that I knew back then,it's all to late to set things right 'cause everything has been," The second part is talking about how he knows he can't change it. It makes him mad and it hurts him. "Let's try and act like this didn't happen. Follow your friends like you ever had them" Makes me believe he just wants to forget about it and move on no matter how much it hurts him."

On songmeanings.net I also found this comment:

"In AP magazine Jeremy said that this is about what was going on in his relationship with his ex-girlfriend of 4 years near the end of their relationship. He moved out of their shared apartment and in with parents again. Overall he said he tries to convey throughout the record that he was too involved with work to be with someone."

I don't know if the second comment is true, but I do agree with the first comment. And apart from that, It's Complicated is just a very catchy song.

The lyrics to It's Complicated can be found here

I hope you like the song as much as I do. If you do, I highly reccomend the other songs on the album.
Thanks for reading!

Song Of The Week: The Number Of The Beast by Iron Maiden

Hello everyone,

The cover of the album
Source
The song of the week for this week is The Number Of The Beast by Iron Maiden.
I've known the bandname 'Iron Maiden' for as long as I can remember, but I've discovered their music last year, through Guitar Hero, with their song 2 Minutes To Midnight. And only about three weeks ago was when I looked some of their other songs up on YouTube, which resulted in buying two of their CD's last Saturday: Somewhere Back In Time: The Best of 1980-1989 and The Number of The Beast. I think Iron Maiden is really, really awesome and The Number Of The Beast is the song that I've liked the most so far.

I found some background information about The Number Of The Beast on Wikipedia:

According to the song's writer, bassist and band-founder Steve Harris, [The Number Of The Beast] was inspired by a nightmare he had after watching the film Damien: Omen II, in addition to the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns.
The song opens with a spoken word passage, read by English actor Barry Clayton, which quotes directly from the Book of Revelation. According to lead vocalist, Bruce Dickinson, the band originally asked Vincent Price to read the intro, but decided to hire Clayton after Price refused to do it for anything less than £25,000.
The track is known for its very long, high-pitched and guttural wail at the end of the intro, which Allmusic describes as "the most blood-curdling Dickinson scream on record". In the Classic Albums documentary based on The Number of the Beast album, Dickinson states that it came about through frustration with producer Martin Birch, who forced him to sing the introduction repeatedly for hours on end.

And, according to the website songfacts.com, Steve Harris has also said that 'Basically, this song is about a dream. It's not about devil worship.'
Personally, the thought of the song being about devil worship never crossed my mind, but well, so, just in case you were wondering, it's not. Don't worry.

I hope you like the song as much as I do. See you next time!

Song Of The Week: Jesus Of Suburbia by Green Day

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the lack of updating, but I'm currently recovering from a Harry Potter marathon I did with three very good friends of mine and I'm exhausted. It's a bit late, but here's the song of the week for this week!

The American Idiot album cover
Source: Tumblr
This time, the song of the week is Jesus Of Suburbia from Green Day. I discovered Green Day in 2008/2009. I had heard from them before, but never heard one of their songs, until I watched MTV one morning before school and When I Come Around from Green Day was playing. I really liked the song and the overall sound, so I looked up more songs. At the end of 2009, 21st Century Breakdown from Green Day was the first CD I ever brought.
Even though I loved Green Day, my little sister loved them even more and started collecting their other CD's. At some point she brought American Idiot and we played it in the car. To this day, American Idiot is my favourite Green Day album. Jesus Of Suburbia, Holiday, Letterbomb, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends, are my favourite songs form the album.

Jesus Of Suburbia is actually called Jesus Of Suburbia/ City Of The Damned/ I Don't Care/ Dearly Beloved/ Tales Of Another Broken Home, but I think everyone gets why it's just called Jesus Of Suburbia most of the time. Billie Joe Armstrong, Green Day's singer and guitarist, says Jesus Of Suburbia "broke every rule people thought Green Day were supposed to be. Lyrically, it's everything about my past, but at the same time, written on the outside as well. That song is like purging everything, throwing it out."

And this is what the song means:

Jesus of Suburbia

This is the introduction of the album's leading character. He describes himself as "the son of rage and love", living on a "steady diet of soda pop and Ritalin" and "doing someone else's cocaine". He sarcastically mentions that this messed up life he's living is completely normal for him: "there's nothing wrong with me, this is how I'm supposed to be", and goes on with his story about the "land of make believe" that he lives in.

City of the Damned

The motto says "Home is where your heart is", but it doesn't mean that this works for everyone; some people just don't fit in. Jesus points out that people don't really care about anyone but themselves these days ("Lost children with dirty faces today no one really seems to care"), and surrounded by this indifference he states that now he doesn't care either.

I Don't Care

Jesus gives his opinion on the world - "everyone is so full of shit, born and raised by hypocrites". He says that if no one cares about him, there is no reason for him to care about anyone else ("I don't care if you don't"). He's tired of this "land of make believe" that doesn't believe in him.

Dearly Beloved

This part shows a softer side of Jesus' personality. His disguise of sarcasm covers his cry for help ("Oh therapy, can you please fill the void?"). He's tired of being alone and rejected, of not fitting in. He wants to break free.

Tales of Another Broken Home

Jesus states that he's not living, he's just existing - "to live and not to breathe is to die in tragedy". And he decided to run away and try to find something worth living for. He doesn't want to walk that same line anymore, doesn't want to keep living a life that he has no faith in. He feels no shame for leaving - "running away from pain when you've been victimized". He doesn't know what's waiting for him, he just wants to start a new life.

I hope that everyone who reads this gives Jesus Of Suburbia a listen, and I hope you'll all like it as much as I do. Thanks for reading!

Song Of The Week: Sirensong by The Cure

Hello everyone,

This Song Of The Week post is about Sirensong from The Cure, since it got the most votes on the poll :)

I discovered The Cure in the winter of 2010/2011. I don't really remember why, but I think I just heard their name somewhere and looked them up or something. I found out about their 2008 album, 4:13 Dream, listened to it, and liked it a lot. On my holiday in Czech I found the album in some CD shop (in Czech the music shops have the biggest selection of alternative/rock/metal/deathcore/whatever music ever! They have everything) and brought it immediately. We played it a lot in the car, my parents like The Cure too, it reminds them of the 'good old times' or something, and I listened to it on my iPod as well so whenever I listen to it now it just brings back the holiday feelings and I love it. Sirensong in particular is a very dreamy song, like ocean waves almost. It's really peaceful.
You can find out more about The Cure by clicking here

On the website SongMeanings.com, I found this comment: It's basically someone so wanting to be together and wishing the other one felt the same, but like many of his songs, he doesn't care and is stuck thinking: shall I lie and tell her will love her forever? Sometimes he gets in the game and deceives her, and sometimes shocks her as she's innocent so he can get rid of her, sometimes wants perhaps to abuse her and in the end, he tells her to fuck off. If she dont' get the message that he basically either hates or despises her, which sounds like that to me, then wot?

I have been looking, but couldn't find an official source to confirm this meaning, but I was thinking the same thing actually. You can find the lyrics from Sirensong here (all the songs from the album are in the list, just scroll down and you'll find Sirensong too)

A nice newsflash is that The Cure will be playing at several European festivals this summer, including Pinkpop in The Netherlands. Which of course is totally awesome and I am going to beg my parents for money for a ticket. Which they are totally not going to give me but I can give it a shot though.

Thank you for reading!

Song Of The Week: A Little Piece Of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold

Hello everyone,

I decided to start a new series of posts on this blog, and they'll be called Song Of The Week. Since my taste in music ranges from Metallica to Coldplay and from Gothminister to Mika, I figured It'd be a good idea to share the songs that I like with all of you! It's like the Behind The Songs posts I used to do with Muse songs, but with every artist/band I listen to. I pick a song weekly, and tell you the background story. Let's just begin with A Little Piece Of Heaven from Avenged Sevenfold.

Source: Google Images
I discovered the band Avenged Sevenfold (A7X) in the summer of 2010. I needed some new artists on my iPod and someone suggested A7X. I listened to some of the examples of their songs on iTunes and brought the song 'Nightmare'. After a few weeks, I just brought their entire discography because I found them really awesome. The song A Little Piece Of Heaven is from their fourth album, which is simply called 'Avenged Sevenfold'. I didn't like the album at first so I got it off of my iPod, but I listened to it again a couple of weeks ago and discovered that I did like the songs now. A Little Piece Of Heaven is definately my favourite song from the album, and one of my favourite songs in general.

The official music video with lyrics

According to the website songfacts.com, A Little Piece Of Heaven is "a romantic, yet very dark song, this is about a couple living together. The man fears that something will happed and their relationship will break up, so he takes control and kills his girl, preserves her and rapes her dead body when needed. Soon she comes back from the dead and kills her man the same way he did. He is brought back from the dead and they get back together after he feels remorse for what he did. They get married in death for the rest of their unnatural life before they start killing other people."

The lyrics from A Litte Piece Of Heaven are in the video, but you can also find them here
What do you thing of the first Song Of The Week post? Do you have any advice? You can always leave a comment if you want.
